William "Billy" Hodgson (Billy 'Jock' Hodgson, September 28, 1851 - June – October 10, 1911) was a Scottish sailor and author primarily known as one of Jack London's literary mentors.
Hodgson was born (some sources say September 20), in Scotland near Dunbar to Robert Hodgson and Janet Wilson (Willison) – he was their second son and third child (his older brother was Robert Burns Hodgson). In his youth he joined the merchant marine as cabin boy at age seven under Captain John Thompson of Edinburgh's Merchant Marine Company. He apprenticed as a cabin boy on several ships including Lord Ashburton, Admiral Curzon and others. Later he became steward on the British ship Otago bound for New Zealand with Captain Richard Owen who also had once been cabin boy under Captain Thompson. He eventually rose to First Mate, then Captain aboard ships including Leith — Algiers; Kirkcaldy along with Captain Edward Brand.[1]
In 1887 he married Hellen Bucknall at St George's Church in Gravesend.[2]
Hodgson was well known around Scotland as an after-dinner speaker with readings in front of the British Lions Club at Miner's Hall, Newcastle upon Tyne amongst other venues.[3] He also performed on stage at Anderson's Theatre, Dunbar. Among his publications are "The Ship That Was Wrecked" (1899), "Men I Have Worked with", His Story of Adventure as told by Billy Hodgson (1907) by A.P. Watt.[4].
"Men I Have Worked with" has been declared a valuable primary source on history of sail by the Marine Historians Society of America.[5]
Hodgson died in San Francisco after undergoing major surgery.[6]
